St George's goes green

Benefits...

Sustainable & Carbon Neutral

Using ground source heat and electricity generated from solar panels together with insulation of the entire building to produce a carbon neutral building.
This is a sustainable project with the renewable energies on site and forever.

Exemplar that inspires others

The project design of total insulation and low renewable energy requirement is new to a church or community facility in England.
It has become a Flagship project that is inspiring others to learn from.

Wider community use

We are adapting a cold and damp Church for use as a warm and welcoming community building.
It will become a gift to the community to encourage wide usage including groups that normally would not be able to afford such a venue.

Educational resource

Close links with local schools, for educational work, during and after the project.
Control equipment installed for the public display of energy generation and its transmission to local schools.

Cost effective

The combination of total insulation, ground source heat and solar electricity is the most cost effective way of obtaining an acceptably warm community building, in the medium term.
The installation costs are high but the running costs are very low.

...& Challenges

New Technologies & Old Large Buildings

Old, large buildings must be insulated to be efficiently heated by renewable energies.
Underfloor heating and thermal lobbies are essential. Retrofitting is difficult.
The project is the result of a feasibility study supported by other professional inputs.

Transforming the Church space for the Community

The building has to be more flexible, more accessible and more user friendly.
The main space will be subdivided.
The number of floor levels will be reduced.
Thermal lobbies will reduce heat loss, have wheelchair access with automatic doors creating a welcoming feeling.

Fundraising

The installation costs are high and beyond the reach of the Church congregation.
External fund raising is required. More...

The Big Launch

The project was launched in November 2009 by Sir John Houghton, Nobel Laureate for his environmental work on climate change.
